Dr. Jefferson is RMC Professor Emeritus of History, a past-president of the Oral History Association and on the editorial board for The Public Historian for the National Council of Public History. Oral history is the first history and Dr. Jefferson will lead a hands-on workshop about collecting your family history.

Ashland Presbyterian Church presents ...

Built by Bonnets on Wednesday, November 12, 7pm at the church, 401 Virginia St., Ashland. Through short vignettes, members of the church tell its story beginning in 1870s and includes remembrances from Sarah Elmira Royster Shelton and Anne Herndon. The choir will also open the evening with a hymn.

Ashland Presbyterian Church is one of a few local congregations still worshiping in their original building.

Finding Lockwood – A Forgotten Hanover Landmark. Built in the early 1800s, Lockwood is the Hanover County farmhouse where Robert E. Lee spent four days in May 1864 prior to the Battle of Cold Harbor. It was situated on land purchased by the Richmond newspapers where a new production plant was planned. Finding no use for the house, publisher J. Stewart Bryan agreed to help a Richmond couple dismantle the house and move it to a site 12 miles away. Learn Lockwood’s history and its interesting present.

Join us for a book talk and signing with Jody Lynn Allen. Her book Roses in December - Black Life in Hanover County from Civil War to Civil Rights has just been published. Allen is College of William and Mary Associate Professor of History, and Robert Francis Engs Director, The Lemon Project: A Journey of Reconciliation, and an Ashland resident.

The book provides an unprecedented look at Hanover’s Black community after a 1902 revision to the Virginia Constitution effectively disfranchised Black men who had gained the right to vote in 1870.

Join us for a guided walking tour of a part of the Race Course Addition.

Explore the unusual architecture of two 19th century Stick Style houses at the corner of James and Howard streets. Learn the history of this neighborhood that was a racecourse in the 1850s and some of the families who make it home now.

60-minute walking tour ends with a light reception and tour at 207 Howard St.

Space is limited. Reservations are required. Tickets: Members – $15, non-members – $25. Proceeds benefit Ashland Museum programming.
